Re: OSXS MailMan Works?

Have had some very unsatisfying out-of-the-box experience with Mailman under Panther and now same under Tiger. Out of the box, fresh installs have (fatal?) errors when creating new lists (appended example). No list has ever operated as expected. Do get an initial message from a given list to the list admin but that is the last thing received from Mailman for a given list. Suspect that the OSXS installed Mailman does not work, wasting time?

File "/usr/share/mailman/Mailman/MTA/Postfix.py", line 53, in _update_maps
raise RuntimeError, msg % (acmd, status, errstr)
RuntimeError: command failed: /usr/sbin/postalias /private/var/ mailman/data/aliases (status: 1, Operation not permitted)

I have yet do dig into the default mailman install on Tiger, but have been running Mailman installed from source on Jaguar for nearly three years without any problems.

The above error is normally caused by the var/mailman/data/alias.db file not being group writable. I just checked my default Tiger install, though, and the file has the correct perms. something to check, in any case.

Does anyone have experience with updating the default Apple installation? Mailman is now on v. 2.1.6, and there are some new features that I'd like to keep when I migrate to the new machine. Is there a config.log file (as there is when installing from source) someplace on the system that could be used to configure an overwrite of Apple's outdated version?

Dan
