Dear List,
I have a client who has 5 Mac users. The rest are about 100 windows
boxes. The Mac users primarly use Powerpoint, but they also have this
problem with other applications: Quark, Illustrator, etc.
The problem has been VERY INCONSISTANT. The problem has persisted in
their old location and in their new building--so building wiring isn't
the problem. All the Mac users are currently running Panther.
THE PROBLEM: Problems with open files, files in use, the applications
thinking that the file is read only, etc. They save and open all of
their files off of SMB shares. Please see errors:
Powerpoint:
There was an error accessing ART_FILES:2005:COPS:filename.ppt.
-
[filename] is read-only. Do you want to save changes under a different
name?
-
You do not have sufficient access privileges to rename the item
"[filename]".
-
The file is read-only.
-
There was an error accessing [filename].
-
The operation cannot be completed because the item is in use.
-Quark:
Duplicate file name. [-48]
-
Also they are telling me that files will disappear off the file server,
they will save it and it's not there! This problem has been affecting
them for around 3-4 YEARS. They have had this problem on a couple of
Snap servers and a couple of Windows servers running SMB. They are not
100% sure if this problem affected them when using Appletalk, but they
think that it did. Appletalk support is dying as I understand it
anyway.
Currently their file server is Windows 2000 Server--and of course they
are still experiencing this problem. I know that a Mac can reliably use
a W2K server's SMB share reliably. So what's the deal? All the users
have FULL access on the shares and are currently using domain
authentication. The only thing that has been constant is that they have
been **domain users accessing the share**--could this be the problem?
If nobody is able to offer a suggestion, I'm probably going to recommend
setting up a W2K box not joined to the domain with local user accounts
and see if they still have this problem--what do you think?
Only other possible thing I could think of is they have 4 switches daisy
chained together (Netgear FS750, FSM750S, FS524 and 3com 3c16465b.)
This has also remained a constant. None of the Windows users have any
problems.
This is a really weird problem, so if you have any insight, thanks a
lot!
Julian
