probably the easiest, regardless of the directory system involved,
is /usr/libexec/chkpasswd
Can that be run non-interactively?
With expect.

I just like it because it is directory-agnostic. Then you determine
that Samba uses a different method of authentication. chkpasswd works
but SMB log-in's with the same password do not. It's a real mess.
