Question is:
can I leave the new e-macs at 10.4 and use them with my current server
or should I reimage them with the same image (OS 10.3.9) that I used
for the other e-macs in my lab?

I have had to put 3 10.4.1 Minis and iMacs into an environment with a 10.3.7
Xserve (network home folders, Kerberos, the works) and it works like a
champ. Directory Access setup in the Tiger client is even easier than it was
in Panther.

You are asking for potentially serious difficulties, if the Xserve is not running at least 10.3.9. In 10.4, Apple made some significant changes to the LDAP Schema. The update to 10.3.9 prepared the LDAP database for the new schema. You can run 10.4.X clients against a 10.3.9 Server without problems. You must update OS X server to 10.3.9 before updating to Tiger.
