IIRC that's just for the front port. I've run lots of FW tape drives on the rear ports with the front locked.

Our front FireWire port and the two rear FireWire ports have this behavior (only mount if unlocked) on our recent-vintage Xserve G5 (single-processor 2.0 GHz) received July 2005 for FireWire disk drives. Haven't tried FireWire tape drives, etc., so I don't know whether this behavior is only seen for disk drives, but it's certainly true for disk drives. Only know the behavior for 10.4.2 and 10.4.3 Mac OS Server, hasn't run anything earlier. Not just for drives inserted after boot, but also for drives attached at restart / power on. I would expect the rear panel ports to behave differently, but they don't.
