You mean mach_init? Looks like I found an example of that in
system.log. IIRC, trying to start DirectoryService manually always
ended with an error in the log, but somehow it managed to start
anyways. Makes sense now.

The dirserv module in servermgrd refers to Open Directory Server. I
do not believe it accepts stop and start args. DirectoryService is a
part of the client-side Open Directory infrastructure (which runs on
the server since the server is a client of itself).
The naming is quite circular and confusing.
