You should try to isolate and resolve the underlying problem that
is causing directory services to hang. It is not "normal" for a
server to just start hanging every 2 weeks. Something else, maybe
a corrupt filesystem, corrupt LDAP records, or even bad RAM might
be the problem. If this were my production server, I would NOT
want to resolve some "unknown" problem with "therapeutic restarts;"
I would systematically isolate the cause. Start with the logs and
move out from there.
Already tried this. Nobody on this list had anything to offer,
other than Jaime Magiera confirming this behavior on his server. My
next step is to escalate it with Apple support, but I'm looking for
something to keep us "band-aided" until the issue is resolved.
Trust me, I *hate* the idea of "therapeutic restarts"... it's what
I'm used to hearing from MS Exchange admins.
I'd agree with Jacob, this behavior isn't normal. Your "_next_step_"
is to request support? Sounds like you're already trying to band-aid
fix this with the restarts of directory services. I always recommend
you open support channels immediately. After all if you solve the
problem yourself before the support channels hey that's great, but it
din't hurt to get the wheels rolling sooner than later. And just b/c
no one offered a solution doesn't mean there isn't one, but is more
indicative that these sorts of issues aren't easily "guessed" on
forums, they take some digging instead. I'd recommend that if you're
not capable of continuous effort towards resolution with your own
in-house admin resource that you get outside assistance, whether from
Apple or a third party immediately. That said, 10.3 in general is
going to be a losing proposition over time, and ask what your plans
for upgrading to Tiger are, as perhaps you're wasting effort on a
foregone conclusion.
And yes, to those that say there were no solutions or answer's in my
spiel you're right, but that still doesn't mean there can't be good
advice in such comments.
