Disappearing sharepoints

I have an Xserve running OS X Server 10.3.9 that has suddenly developed a
strange problem that I haven't yet found documented anywhere. It has a
boot drive and two drives mirrored and partitioned using SoftRAID. It has
run fine, without interruption for the last six months.

I finished creating all the necessary user accounts a few months ago, but
about half the people haven't needed to log in to this server until now.
When I was testing one of the sharepoints that hadn't been used yet,
logging in as a user who hadn't logged in yet, I got a blank volume list.
This happened with every user who hadn't logged in before. I've checked/
done all of the following (not necessarily in order):

- Turned access for the user off and back on in Workgroup Manager, both
from the Basic tab and the password options on the Advanced tab
- Turned the sharepoint off and back on
- Changed the owner and group for the sharepoint
- Turned options off and back on in the user's password policy, the
global policy
- Verified the disk and partitions
- Checked the status of the RAID drives and volumes in SoftRAID
- Restarted AFP
- Restarted the Xserve
- Created a new user
- Repaired permissions
- Turned Guest access back on (I figured I'd try anything by this point.)

Open Directory and AFP aren't reporting any obvious errors in the logs.

Anyone who's been using the server all along gets a full list of
available volumes when they connect. Except that, in the last day, one of
the volumes is now unavailable to everyone.

This server is our Open Directory master. Everyone is able to see all the
volumes on our other file server, which has a replica from this master.

A new sharepoint created on the boot drive will appear.

I created a new sharepoint in the Shared Items folder on the boot drive,
and all but one of the other sharepoints were again visible to everyone,
even after the new sharepoint is turned off.

So, I have a partial fix, but I'm not seeing or understanding the actual
cause, and it's making me very nervous. I have backups, but they only
give me comfort when things are running right.

Has anyone seen anything like this, or know from the circumstances what
may be happening?
