We would like to achieve the following improvements to our backup system;
1. Reduce contention with workstations by using disk-to-disk to tape scheme.
This doesn't reduce contention on the backup server, it's generally
used so that the workstations don't have to be tightly scheduled
using a d2t method and permits the tape drive to stream.
2. Retain daily incremental backups as a safety net for
corrupt/overwritten files.
You may want to consider differential backups instead as these
generally permit faster recovery times and
3. Decrease the total
Total what?
We currently have a backup system with the following characteristics.
1. 500 GB online storage (2 x 250 FW 400, 2 x 250 FW 800 drives)
2. VXA-2 Firewire drive (FW400)
3. Retrospect 6 Server
4. OS X Server 10.4
5. Dual G4 500
More important is what you're trying to backup, how much of it there
is, and how ephemeral the data being protected is as that is what
dictates what you will need, not what you have for backup dictating
what or how you can backup.
We are planning the following changes;
1. Upgrade to OS X Server 10.4
2. Upgrade to Dual G4 1.4 with Firewire 800
We are stuck with how to retain/achieve the daily incrementals with
disk-to-disk to tape scheme.
What's the problem that's "sticking" you"? What does your backup
policy require? What does that policy suggest is acceptable wrt
recovery?
You first need a sound Backup Policy. Just throwing hw and sw at a
problem isn't a good solution unless it meets those policy objectives.
Furthermore upgrading the server is probably not necessary as CPU
speed isn't normally the major factor as backup isn't CPU intensive.
Also, Firewire tape mechanisms score poorly over SCSI. And all the
Firewire storage is going to make that one contentious bus.
