I can confirm this. LaCie power supplies on all d2 mechanisms are marginal.
(All d2 power supplies, not just Big Disks.)
I reported this to macintouch.com - search there for details.
This problem is manifested in intermittent spin-downs/spin-ups and OS error
messages, "The device was improperly removed..." It is *extremely* hard to
diagnose, unless you suspect the power supply. Took me almost a year to
figure it out.
If you are having problems with a LaCie drive, the first thing to do is to
test pin voltages. Luckily, there is a schematic on the power supply, and
this is simple to do, even with a cheap voltage meter from Radio Shack.
(One pin is supposed to be at 5 volts, but mine was only doing 2 volts.)
I own a lot of LaCie d2 drives, and this problem is common. I now keep at
least 2 spare power supplies on hand at all times ($19 each).
Other than the power supply problem, I still like LaCie. They need to
acknowledge this extreme situation, however, and supply a good quality
replacement power supply.
BTW - On LaCie's behalf, I will mention that they did a no-cost controller
card replacement in one of my drives that was a year out of warranty. That
was how I finally figured out what the problem was - when they returned the
drive, it came with a new power supply. The new supply worked, but the drive
behaved just as before when using my old supply, thus isolating the problem.
