Hello all,
It seems that the discussions and questions about DNS are endless, and I've
got a question of my own that I can't seem to find an answer to in the list
archives.
Disclaimer: I fall under the much-maligned "novice" or "rookie" sysadmin
category. I'm going to go ahead and say right away (mostly for Dan's sake)
that I'm not trying to be a hostmaster here, so running DNS on my XServe
will be avoided as much as it can be.
Current setup:
-Small business LAN
-Tiger Server sitting behind a firewall and a router
-DHCP being served by the router, LAN IP being assigned to en0 on Xserve
-Single static IP assigned to router via static PPPoE
-DNS being hosted by domaindirect.com pointing to my static IP, and firewall
forwarding ports to my Xserve for things like web, etc.
What I want to do:
While I know I'm not terming it correctly, basically what I want is
"internal and external DNS". That is to say, I want to continue to use
external DNS serving for internet clients to be able to access services on
the Xserve from outside, while having some sort of DNS setup allowing LAN
clients to connect to the server using the domain name for services like
AFP, SMB etc. from inside the building. All of this, of course, while still
using my ISP's DNS server to resolve hostnames on the internet. I have read
time and time again that running "internal" DNS on a LAN has become
increasingly frowned upon, but I guess I'm wondering how it can be avoided
if I want to access local services using a domain name?
While reading "DNS and BIND" is on the top of my list of priorities, I am
attempting to stay as removed from the DNS system as possible while still
getting things to work until I do read it.
Again, I realise my limitations, but would like to get this going if
possible. It seems to me to be a fairly easy setup, but then again, what do
I know?
With many thanks in advance, and flamesuit on...
