ignoring the enclosure for a moment -
Hitachi drives are *all* gaurenteed for 3 years

That said -
the enclosure can accelerate drive death by simply NOT being cool 
enough.

I had a 120g/7200 rpm seagate in a FW box - I did not realize until it 
died how hot the interior of the enclosure got.  The surface of the 
drive (not the platters) was so hot it was NOT touchable.

So...
it seems that when choosing a drive enclosure (1 or 50) - be sure that 
there will be sufficient cooling for the drive(s) in the case.
