Re: La Cie disks

There seems to be - but I can't state this as fact - a problem with some La Cie Big Discs where the power supply is marginal and this causes intermittent problems

This is a common problem with lots of companies. When I was in a CB radio shop, Uniden came out with a Cobra brand sideband radio. Mysteriously, Radio Shack came out with the same radio and parts (yes, the same exact uniden stamped board with part number that's in the cobra model) with a few exceptions, the Radio Shack model changed all 25 volt capacitors to 16 volt ones, at the usual 80 percent derating, that brings it down to an effective 12.8 volts and a standard car produces 13.8 volts in it's power supply, sometimes up above 15. When the voltage spikes like that, it shorts out the capacitors causing them to lock up (short out) and then the whole board is trashed all the way back to the power supply connector. Radio shack conveniently says it's a problem with your car that caused it so they make you buy a new one. They don't tell you that they reduced the specifications for the radio just so they WILL fail under normal usage (it's called programmed failure). This ki
nd of situation could be what's going on with the Lacie drives.
