Re: Software update server

Does anyone know Apple's standard server address? We have some machines which have the su server stuck on the domain even though it isn't bound anymore. Has anyone else seen this problem?

Thanks,
Scott

You could also do defaults write
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate to specify the actual prefs
file to edit, with appropriate permissions of course.

It's normally set as a managed pref through WGM in the form:
http://yourserverfqdn:8088
But you can also do it via terminal:
defaults write com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL "http://
yourserverfqdn:8088/index.sucatalog"

In my experience, that will only set it for the user that runs the 'defaults' command. To set it for all users:

defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate
CatalogURL "http://server:8088/";

To set it for the root user, which will enable you to use the
softwareupdate command-line tool (which must be run as root):

sudo defaults write com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL "http://
server:8088/"

Putting the "index.sucatalog" on the end is completely unnecessary.
