I have a web client that would like to add a shopping cart to their
site. Any opinions on the best method to implement this feature?
PHP/MySQL? WebObjects? Ready-made modules? Third-party web host
package?
It's really a wide open question that has no answer.
Normally you have a set of requirements and evaluation criteria and
that drives your choices. You're being to vague to provide a "best"
recommendation. Most often this problem is caused by putting the cart
before the horse.
Who's developing this? What do your developers have to say? They are
generally opinionated people who get upset when their code doesn't
run b/c you decided WebObjects when they were coding WebSphere.
What does your systems manager have to say? They normally have
opinions too, based on what they already offer on their systems and
how they envision security.
Pointy-headed management types also have specific considerations like
budget which may eliminate third party turnkey solutions or dictate
that there's no development budget. Have you talked to them?
But the biggest driver is the shopping cart project manager. They
have specific UI requirements, needs for integration to the rest of
the site, data requirements that drive database choices, et cetera.
Have you talked to these people? Use them to further refine your
requirements and criteria before asking again.
