Depends on the day.  If I am using a laptop from some random hotspot, it seems to me
that a password is safer, because a laptop is (relatively) insecure.  If someone
steals it, they can get root, and my key, and it's game over on the server.

Keys are only preferable if you have absolute control over the integrity of the
client hardware.

(oddly, I attended a meeting on just this topic within the last half hour)
