Hello all - This is something I've not really explored in depth
over the course of the past 18 months I've been working with our
server (Xserve G5 10.4.3) so I'm asking for some general guidelines
please. I would like to know what I could be doing on a regular
basis (or what the system will be doing behind the scenes) to keep
things wound nice and tight and clutter free; how much does this
differ from the desktop maintenance on the clients ?
Not a heck of a lot. Both server and client rely on the periodic
scripts - now kicked off by launchd, and located in /etc/periodic.
I'm thinking of log rolling, cache flushing, CUPS spools etc. I
backup to tape using Retrospect. I'm reluctant to tinker with the
server in this way for the obvious reasons. Any advice (or docs. or
URLs) much appreciated, many thanks :)
Not 100% sure what you're after, but I find my OS X server installs
pretty maintenance-free. Every now and then, an issue may crop up
with a specific sub-system, but that's something that needs to be
dealt with on a case-by-case basis and not something that gets taken
care of with a maintenance script.
Make sure your OS drive maintains adequate free space and the system
stays happy! Of course, this advice does not take into account any
custom things you may be doing.
