Services for Macintosh provides AFP connectivity between Windows
machines and Macs, albeit with a deprecated specification. Here is a
link for AFP information:
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Filing_Protocol>. (There are
well-regarded third party products like GroupLogic's ExtremeZ-IP that
can provide cross-platform connectivity using a more modern AFP spec.)

If you prefer to (or need to) connect to Windows servers using SMB,
your Mac OS X computer can use Samba to perform that function out of
the box, as it were. It has been included in MOSX for years.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both. Your environment,
infrastructure, workflow and your support options are just four
factors that will influence your decision on how your clients will
connect their Macs to Windows servers.
