lookupd problems return (again and again and again...)

Hello,
I've emailed the list before about problems on XServe with 10.4.x in which lookupd crashes, effectively locking everyone out. These have reduced in frequency to a day or two following a restart, leaving the XServe to run at most 10 days problem free since I 'upgraded' to 10.4.x, but I'm still no closer to an explanation or solution.

I've just noticed this odd sequence. I put my laptop to sleep shortly after 10pm last night. When I checked the XServe today, I discovered a lookupd crash report at 22:15:36 and had to do killall on lookupd to get things on the XServe running again (I stay logged into the server with SSH to recover from these events).

Looking at my laptop's system.log to remember what time I put it to sleep, I discovered this line:

Aug 31 22:14:10 morgan-powerbook launchd: Server 0 in bootstrap 1103 uid 0: "/usr/sbin/lookupd"[16593]: exited abnormally: Hangup

which comes from this section

Aug 31 22:14:01 morgan-powerbook kernel[0]: AFPSleepWakeHandler: going to sleep
Aug 31 22:14:10 morgan-powerbook kernel[0]: AirPort: Link DOWN (Client disAssoc 0)
Aug 31 22:14:10 morgan-powerbook configd[68]: AppleTalk shutdown
Aug 31 22:14:10 morgan-powerbook configd[68]: posting notification com.apple.system.config.network_change
Aug 31 22:14:10 morgan-powerbook launchd: Server 0 in bootstrap 1103 uid 0: "/usr/sbin/lookupd"[16593]: exited abnormally: Hangup
Aug 31 22:14:10 morgan-powerbook configd[68]: setting hostname to "morgan-powerbook.local"
Aug 31 22:14:10 morgan-powerbook configd[68]: AppleTalk shutdown complete
Sep 1 06:35:46 morgan-powerbook kernel[0]: System Sleep
Sep 1 06:35:46 morgan-powerbook kernel[0]: System Wake
Sep 1 06:35:46 morgan-powerbook kernel[0]: Wake event 0008

crashreporter.log on XServe looks like this:

Wed Aug 31 22:15:36 2005 crashdump[8490]: crashdump started
Thu Sep 1 06:36:27 2005 crashreporterd[133]: mach_msg() reply failed: (ipc/send) invalid destination port
Thu Sep 1 06:36:27 2005 crashdump[8490]: Started writing crash report to: /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/lookupd.crash.log
Thu Sep 1 06:36:29 2005 crashdump[8490]: Finished writing crash report to: /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/lookupd.crash.log

How is it that lookupd exits abnormally on my laptop during the sleep sequence, and there is an event involving lookupd on the XServe only 86 seconds later? Naturally, it doesn't happen every time I close my laptop, but it seems too close to be coincidental. The XServe is an ODM, webmail, cyrus, postfix, mailman, DNS and AFP server. Only Mac software configured using SA is running on it.

By the way, Apple's just replaced faulty RAM and an internal harddrive module, but the problems predate these changes (and made no difference to their recurrence).

Cheers,
Morgan
