Open Directory won't start up

I tried to create a new account in WGM with password type "shadow password," but the type switched back to "crypt" as soon as I left the window.

This led me to realize that my Open Directory/Password Server was off. The "Start Service" button for that service is grayed out. According to the log, Open Directory did not come back on after my recent upgrade from 10.3.9 to 10.4.2.

The machine is Dual 2 GHz Power Macintosh G5 running FTP, AFP, QTSS, Web services, Windows service, MySQL and Plone. WGM has been wiggy since the update, too, so I'm wondering if it's all connected.

Any suggestions?
