"What do you need to do?" would be the better question.

The question cannot be answered at this time.

Then you'll get an answer that while technically correct, may be of little
real use to you.

There's actually
quite a few things Server has that client doesn't, but if you don't need
those things, then they don't really matter.

I am mostly just interested in educating myself and was hoping that
someone had a comprehensive list of things that client is incapable
of...note, I do mean _incapable_, not difficult (for example, some might
say that setting up a Virtual Host with Apache is difficult with client,
but one can do it with client).

All the open directory features are only able to run on server.

Anything having to do with providing Kerberized OS services is Server only.

Service ACLs require server.

Software Update server requires Server...and Mac OS X 10.4 on the clients
too.

iChat server that talks to Open Directory requires Server

I'm not sure if there is a comprehensive list, but the Apple Dev site would be a good place to look.
I guess one could argue that only the Apple proprietary server bits could not be replicated on the client, if you are open to rolling your own from source/packages.

While O.D. may not be possible, the basic OpenLDAP and Kerberos options are.
ACLs and Software Update Server, no dice (to my limited knowledge of alternatives at least).
While iChat isn't, Jabber is, etc...

Of course this is just a matter of what is available by default versus what is possible. If you decide to roll your own, you should make sure the dev kit is installed of course. The darwin lists have some good additional info.

As they say: linux [*nix] is only free if your time is of no value to you

:ps
