Re: MacOSX Server & Client

Hi,

I am mostly just interested in educating myself and was hoping that someone had a comprehensive list of things that client is incapable of...note, I do mean _incapable_, not difficult (for example, some
might say that setting up a Virtual Host with Apache is difficult
with client, but one can do it with client).

OSX Server can be a OpenDirectory server and Primary Domain controller. I.e., user accounts are stored centrally in the OpenDirectory, and users on client computers log in to their client machines using their server-stored credentials.

You can only do this with OSX client if you compile loads of open source software (OpenLDAP, Kerberos5, Samba 3, only to mention some of them), and you miss out on the easy-to-use server admin GUI. Not to speak of Apple Password Server, which is closed source, i.e. you won't be able to keep your Windows and Apple passwords in sync.

Regards
Tobias
