I guess everyone thought it was off topic... I'll reply because it was what
got me my G5 Xserve and into OSX Server I the first place.
I use my G5 with mirrored 750 gig internal drives to host our digital image
library (about 300 gig) and I back it up to an external firewire drive
nightly and to a tape drive weekly. We use Filemaker as an asset management
program which has a lot of pros and cons... (the pros being mainly I can
customize it a drop of a hat and we apparently have a lot of hats!) and the
cons being that I'm not a professional software designer and occasionally
screw up and misplace images when someone does something I never
anticipated...
The hardware is fine for our purposes... 3-5 people using constantly with
about 15 people total having access. Everyone runs 100 base T with the art
department concentrated on one hub and everyone else on another.. Speed is
never and issue even if people are editing off the server. The software
(being OSX Server 10.3.9) is awesome. My biggest issues have always been
backup and redundancy.
So in conclusion... Think through your backup and cause its a lot of data
that changes a lot and focus on asset management, because believe me from
personal experience, when you lose and image in that big a library its a
real pain to get it back
