Samba default files (was:Re: Samba problems and more)

Hi Peter, hi all!

Thanks for your advice. I guess that SMB is to many of the origins of our problems. Apparently, there are lots of updates concerning this problem.
But about samba updates : has anyone got any experience in updating manually the samba resources? I know how it's done from the UNIX world, but won't the 10.4.3. update scramble my manual updates?

Furthermore, can anyone tell me where OS-X keeps the templates it uses when I start/restart the samba service from the ServerAdmin app? I want to change some advanced options in the /etc/smb.conf, but ServAdmin keeps overwriting it with some kind of default values (which btw are not found in the /etc/smb.conf.template as the name would suggest)...

TIA

marc.

Tiger Server already has the MaxThreads jacked up to 128. I ran into server hangs in Panther and Apple support suggested this article as a possible solution. It didn't help in my situation. I have since moved to Tiger Server, but my problem (spontaneous reboots w/ panic.log entries talking about an 'unhandled trap') still persists.
I've got a hardware tech coming tomorrow with a new mobo & CPUs to see if it clears this problem up.

I'm not claiming my problem is related to Marc's, just that the MaxThreads has been jacked up to the level that the article suggests in Tiger Server.

Good luck, Marc!

Dear all,

Currently, we're deploying a Tiger Server running
on a doubleG5 XServe with 700GB XRAID system in
our school (school's name is LTEtt). The purpose
of this system is to provide the following
services :

- Open Directory Master (i.e. login for W2K/website users)
- Primary Domain Controller (the only one) for the domain "LTETTDOMAIN"
- SMB shares (3 of them), 1 private per user, 2
shared uses mounted as Z, X and Y drives resp. to
Winusers.

- and in a near future printer sharing (of no importance now)

Currently, we have NO Mac clients in our network,
only W2K machines. There are about 2000 users
using the system (imported through a text
delimited file) where there are about 300
connecting at the same time onto the server.

That's a LOT of users for the Mac OS X PDC. One issue from 10.3 was that lookupd would get overwhelmed by all the samba logins. <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107899> Give that a try.

IMHO, I wouldn't attempt the Mac PDC with more that 100 clients. But that's based on 10.3 experiences.
