Determining the status of a OS X account

Assuming one has setup OS X server "Tiger" using Open Directory for user
administration. 

If I remove the "access account" check box for a user, they obviously do
not get access. 

Where within Open Directory is the access attribute affected or changed?

Can I access this access attribute via java when connected via a
standard LdapCtxFactory?
