On Monday, I plunged ahead and upgraded one of our in-house boxes, an
Xserve G4, from MOSXS v.10.3.8 to v.10.3.9, after backing it up,
checking permissions, etc. A few notes on the config:
* Xserve G4 (tray-load)
* 1.5GB RAM
* mirror RAID created by Disk Utility
* Open Directory master, replicating to a dual-CPU G4 on our LAN
* BIND v.9.3.0 w/views for internal & external DNS
* One natted IP address assigned to the built-in NIC, w/one IP alias
added to it (for BIND)
* AFP
* FTP
* Apache 1.3.x
* Two LDAP accounts
* Approximately 12 "local" accounts for virtual hosts/websites
That's it. No mail, no SMB, no firewall, no third-party add-ons,
nothing else.
After the up-grade, everything worked fine, except that none of the
local accounts could log into the box, even though WGM allowed me to
manipulate the users' data. The two LDAP-based accounts, which are both
admins, worked flawlessly. Since this is a low-volume server at the
moment, and because I have all the accounts pazzwerds in a small secure
database, I opted to save time and simply delete and recreate them
using the same UID and GID for each. After I'd spent 10 minutes
deleting/recreating, everything worked as advertised.
Because I'm not running Cyrus on this box, I didn't test the IMAP
service to see if that was also problematic, but I wonder if what
happened to my users' accounts is possibly part and parcel of the
larger issues with 10.3.9, that people have reported. I haven't
examined any of the logs yet, but if anyone really wants me to, I will.
