Can OS X Server Replace a W2K AD server?

I am trying to get rid of a Windows 2000 server machine. Most of what
it does is simply file service that could be carried out by any Unix
machine running Samba. However, I am trying to find a solution by
which users can use the same password for their Unix logins on our
network (currently derived from NIS) and for connecting to their SMB
shares. Currently this is possible because the Unix systems, running
Microsoft's PAM module, synchronize Unix password changes down to the
Windows server's Active Directory database.

I can try to set up some LDAP/Kerberos thing on Unix (though I cannot
yet figure out just how to make this work); but is there a way to do
this on OS X Server that will make it any easier?
