Re: OT: G5 Migration with computer problem

Hey all,

Okay, here's a tricky one: I'm adding two new G5s to the top of our cascade here at the office. I was planning on using the Setup Assistant's migration tool to suck user info off the old machines.

Well, one of those old machines went down today, and we haven't been able to solve the problems. The machine runs OS 9 most of the time, and keeps getting a flashing question mark on startup. Disk repair/permissions repair has solved nothing, and we can't find the hardware test disks for the user.

Question: Is it safe to use the migration tool to suck data off this screwed up machine onto a new G5, or could I be screwing up the G5 in the process? What exactly does the migration tool copy?

Any help would be great appreciatedŠ Thanks,

The reasons as to why you get a flashing question mark folder at boot and the integrity on your volume and data are two different factors. If your volume passes repair permissions and disk verify then the volume is OK. This would mean the data on it, if used for migration or any other purpose, is also OK.

The reasons why you get the flashing question mark folder on boot is rooted in bad boot parameters in nvram. You should be able to fix these by booting with the cmd-opt-P-R keys held down at power up. You should hear a startup chime, keep the keys depressed until you've heard a total of five startup chimes, then release. It may take some seconds btwn the chimes.

If this doesn't solve your problem you'll need to drop into Open Firmware to fix this further. You can see your nvram settings using `nvram -p` from a shell / the Terminal. If you could post those results it would be helpful.
