Hey Eric. Actually, I'd already read that article, and although I can't be 100% sure, I don't think it applies in my case. The box was upgraded on Monday, but no one noticed the problem until Wednesday afternoon (When I said low-volume, I meant it!), so there was ample time for LDAP to re-index. Also, the problem was with the local accounts, not the LDAP accounts.

Actually it probably was the same issue, just the latter part of this problem, namely that Open Diretcory wasn't set to look to the local accounts (stored in netinfo) in your case. It seems as if in the 10.3.9 update the Directory Access definitions can get munged resulting in OD stores not being marked to be consulted.
