[10.4 Server] What a big disappointment in email.

Well you get it installed and fired up, examine the logs and behold, amavisd-new is outdated and on the eve of a new release as well, clamav is version 0.80 and the logs signal an outdated/deprecated version that Tomasz Kojm says soon the db servers will stop feeding this version forcing the update as a requirement for continued use.

To boot, Apple's doing some unfamiliar startup processing on these two apps making it difficult to update them.

I tried installing my own version in /usr/local, after starting up, the apps are killed and Apple's install takes over and your back to square one.

An install in /usr proved to be working until the first e-mail is received, seems that even the outdated amavisd-new has been reworked in some manner and some additional processing is going on.

Unfortunately, I thought I made a copy of this file before overwritting it and it turns out I didn't so I'm going to have to wait for someone to send it to me since installing on my B7W G3 test machine was a major time consuming affair that I don't wish to go through again just to get this one file.

After discussing it with Mark Martinec, we concluded that using the outdated version is dangerous and can cause attachments to become corrupt and other problems because of some coding issues which were corrected with a patch in 2.2.1 and 2.2.2 but I do like the use of / etc/spam to hold the clamav/amavisd-new config files and I'll be looking at updating to the latest current version.

I will be looking into what is involved in actually updating these packages without breaking anything but this will require a little time.
