Re: Blue Screen

I am tunneling. I prefer to use the console for some software installing; and besides, I like my Macs working the way they're advertised to work. If the console doesn't work, something's wrong, and that could affect other things.

I'm waiting until tonight when there's little trafffic and will try a reboot per previous suggestions.

I'm running an Xserve at a colo with OS X Server 10.4.3, and for
some crazy reason, I can no longer VNC into my box, instead I just
get a big blue empty screen. And yet, all services appear to be
running normally, SA works, WM works. Any ideas why I can't get
past the blue screen? It's like it's hanging up on the login window.

Can you SSH in? Look for loginwindow processes and kill them ('sudo killall loginwindow' should do it). This will force-end any GUI user sessions, returning to the login screen. If the login screen is supposed to be there, it should kill the process and respawn after a few seconds. I don't have stuck system to test with, but it worked fine on a normal one. :-)

On top of that I would ask why you need a console login for most stuff anyway. If you do really need it I hope you are tunneling that VNC connection. :)
