The cp: error was recorded in /var/log/system.log, but the panics (panic: vnode_put(...): iocount < 1) were in /Library/Logs/panic.log. I am assuming it has something to do with propogating ACL attributes across the file system -- which we never bothered configuring, as we relied on our previous 10.3 installs POSIX permissions...
