A big thanks to Matt and Josh for the pointer to the networksetup
command, for the curious - what I did was this:
#networksetup -listallnetworkservices
#networksetup -duplicatenetworkservice "Built-in Ethernet 1"
Ethernet-XXX-YYY
(where XXX-YYY were the last two octets of our subnet address at
NC State University)
#networksetup -setmanual Ethernet-XXX-YYY secondipaddress subnetmask
router
I've seen some mentions that the subnetmask for the duplicate network
service should be 255.255.255.255, but I used our normal campus
subnet mask and am able to ping and ssh to the new address from
outside the subnet, so I don't think that was required. If someone
knows differently that this going to bite me, please let me know.
The afp548.com article, as usual, was very informative, thanks Josh.
