I would hope it would be OK to compare options on this list! :-) Is MacOS X Server a good fit for these needs, or is it not? How does this product offer advantages over MacOS X Server?

Of course it is valid to compare options here.

Always! This is a _discussion_ list after all. I find that our vendor friends like Anita and Paul usually add much more than astroturfing to the discussions. Paul in particular has a lot of good info on SMB/ AD.

As for iTools, it offers many of the same features OS X Server does, at lest in terms of Internet services.

Yeah, I remember testing it on Mac OS X 1.2 back in the day. Nice stuff then, but for Mac OS X Server now I don't really need it.

Where OS X Server scores in in it's File Sharing, user management, and collaborative services.

Sure. Try to roll your own mcx server on client.

Another option is George's Exim/FTP/MySQL/Courier system at http:// maxo.captainnet.net/installs/index.html. It offers the advantages of not using system accounts at all, but stores all user account info in MySQL for its Internet services. And it scores in that it uses exim, perhaps the best MTA on the planet (IMNSHO).

I like Exim a lot, but rarely venture outside the default postfix now for most uses. And yes, George's stuff rocks if you need that scaleability.
