the only things server is for are:
a fancy user interface to the core functionality already existing in the client machines
the ability to share files with other mac computers (something taken away from client machines with the shift from os9 to osx)

??? You can share files, and Apple's way of doing it in Mac OS X client is quite elegant IMHO, as it provides a goodl deal of security outside of the box. If one needs to go further, there is still SharePoints available.

a watchdog timer that restarts services that were supposed to be running but for some reason shut down

Ok, but... errrrrrr... Open Directory stuff, eventually ? :-) --

"As Mac OS X marches towards beta and then release, these x86 vestiges will probably start to disappear. The cross-platform card is something to watch for, however. For the first time, the only thing keeping Apple off of the "PC" platform will be its business plan. And hey, with Steve Jobs calling the shots, anything is possible." - John Siracusa, about Mac OS X DP2, December 14th, 1999
