If you want kerberos, this is incorrect.

That's a load if you're now trying to convince me that kerberos isn't available on client.

if somebody wants to run a ftp server only, do it on a client.

If you need kerb, this is incorrect

if somebody wants to run a mail server only, do it on a client.

If you want an easy to maintain user database, this is incorrect.

Server software doesn't give you an easier to maintain database, it provides you with the same database.

if somebody wants to run any combination of the above, do it on a client.

if somebody wants to share files with another computer, buy osx server.

that's the message Apple server tech support gave me.

That tech support person was wronger than a wrong thing that's wrong.

the only things server is for are:
a fancy user interface to the core functionality already existing in the
client machines
the ability to share files with other mac computers (something taken away
from client machines with the shift from os9 to osx)
a watchdog timer that restarts services that were supposed to be running but
for some reason shut down

That completely leaves out Open Directory and the Kerb integration, and is
an astoundingly clueless thing for an Apple person to say.
