and I saw this:

which DOES exactly explain my problem. but I'm currently running Server 10.3.7. I looked in my SW update history, and did NOT see this partic'lar update. so I looked on apple's site for "<x-tad-bigger>Security Update 2004-05-24</x-tad-bigger>", found it but it states it is for installation on 10.3.3. I d/l it anyway, and when it decompresses, it now says "2004-08-09", not "2004-05-24". dam. okay i'll install it anyway. but I get to the "select your HD screen" and my server drive has the dreaded "Red Exclamation Point of Death" explaining "volume does not meet requirements". am I just utterly screwed? I think an Apple engineer could chime in here...

this is obviously a KNOWN issue....

frankly I'm amazed such a terrible bug is shipping with no obvious solution. i've done my homework.

Sounds to me like you have some SSL gunk in your config as the article explains. You said you tried to set up SSL, but didn't have a certificate. Well, obviously that won't work. You need to go back and get rid of any SSL setup like the article suggests.

Also, you may have a different problem. You need to make sure you understand how it is requesting the page. I have seen this same issue crop up before, where the page was being requested with a different server name than the one the admin expected. You can get this info from the activity window in Safari. If it looks correct, then try to clean out any SSL settings.

I'm going along with this explanation here as well on the SSL cruft.

The real question is though, does the mail get sent? Both of the articles you site just refer to the confirmation screen not displaying properly. I had this one too at one point, but it went away with an update from Apple.

FWIW, Apple has started including all security fixes in the OS updates. So if you are on 10.3.7 then you got the contents of Security Update 2004-05-24 somewhere along the way.
