Re: Web access_log question

Hi David,

The magic number is the number of seconds since 1-1-1970 that passed when this logfile was created.
An inconvenient default if you need a specific name.

What I did was setup a CustomLog-entry like this:
CustomLog '|/usr/sbin/rotatelogs "/var/log/httpd/access_log.%Y-%m-%d" 86400' "%V %h %l %u %t \"%r\" %>s %b \"%{Referer}i\" \"%{User-Agent}i\""

Check the man-page of rotatelogs for other options. The above line gives you a separate file for each day. As I process all my web-stats at night, this works quite well for me.

Best regards,

Jaco

When I look into /var/log/httpd I see many access_log files with seemingly
random numbers appended to their names. Is there a method to their seeming
madness? They don't appear to be time and/or date stamps that I can tell.

The reason I want to know is that I've installed Webalizer and want to
move some of my virtual domain's log files to discrete folders within
/var/log/httpd so that I can process them with separate webalizer.conf
files.

For instance I created /var/log/httpd/ts and set up
www.tarantulaspiders.com to log into that folder. Instead of just logging
to access_log it logged to access_log.1154736000. That in itself is fine
with me as long as the log file's name doesn't change.
The rub may be with my webalizer.conf file. I had to set up a line as
follows:

LogFile /var/log/httpd/ts/access_log.1154736000

So if the log file's name changes then webalizer.conf breaks.
Is there a way to make sure that I'm okay as is, or does anyone have any
suggestions on what I should do differently?

Thanks,
David
