An odd login issue is happening when any user(or admin) is trying to access my Mac OS X 10.4 server. After entering a correct user name and password, I get the message "incorrect login".

At which point are they logged in, or what? Did they receive a 530 error?

That is you've stated that they authenticate using their real username/password and then they get this message.

Can you post a `ftp localhost` transaction log from the Terminal demostrating this from the server itself?

Does this happen to all users?

What do the logs say?

If you switch their shells to something else (that doesn't read their current shell's startup scripts) do they get the same message?

The users can login using AFP/SMB.

What about ssh? AFP and SMB don't run local shells. --
