It's not. The 'old version' files are placed on a different
partition/volume/disk/server to the one the current version files are
on.

It's fine. It's configured on the server and runs on the server.
Individual users don't need to worry about setup.
There are currently some questions about how it would work with
Mobile Accounts which I haven't seen useful answers to.
Spotlight
Spotlight 2 works better with client/server setups than Spotlight 1
does.
