Install Wildfire server from Jive Software. They make it about 100x easier to manage users and lists, it is incredibly easy to set up LDAP authentication and it is OSS as well. I also use Spark as a client - it is really easy to push out default config's to home directories. The only thing the user has to do is enter their password.

I remember trying to update those xml files. ugh. That combined with pushing out custom config's of AdiumX proved to be a complete waste of time once I found out about Wildfire.
