| David, The generic icon is probably showing up since the file has lost its resource fork which contains the Creator & Type codes. Without this info, you get a generic icon and the system doesn't know what application to use for opening the file. To confirm this, download a utility that allows editing of resource forks (there are many), open up the good copy of the file to get its Creator & Type codes, then apply these codes to the bad file. ............................................
