A client running an XServe on 10.4.6 and assigned a private IP
address has FTP services running with access from the outside managed
by a Netopia 3346 router doing NAT and the Firewall service on the
XServe blocking all ports except FTP. The FTP Service does not allow
anonymous logons. Access to the FTP site from inside the LAN can be
accomplished from Mac and Windows machines with no problem. Access
from outside the LAN can be done though the Finder by supplying the
proper password within the Server Address line of the Connect to
Server window. The FTP server mounts and the folders are displayed
with all the proper security in place and working.
However, when I try and access the same server using the same domain,
logon and password as was used in the Finder from within an FTP
client such as Captain FTP or Fetch (on a Mac), the connection seems
to be made but the list of files is never returned. In Windows, I
cannot cause a prompt to open that will allow me to enter the logon
and password. If I was unable to access the FTP at all, I would
expect that something was misconfigured in the setup of the FTP
server, the router or the firewall. But the fact that I can get in
from the Finder without a problem is difficult to reconcile with the
other facts. Is there something about the Finder that makes it
special in this regard and how can I cause Windows machines and Mac
clients to be able to access the FTP site properly?
