[netiquitte] Browsing over the other threads

Hello,

I don't usually have anything to say in regards to netiquitte on this list. However, I've noticed a recurring problem as of late and it's eating at me: It seems that some folks are reading this mailing list exclusively for answers to their own questions. In other words, they are not reading the other threads happening on this list. This leads to people asking questions that have just recently been answered, or at least covered in some depth. For example, I've seen four different threads on the list related to Mailman and DNS in the past two weeks. The posters all basically have the same general issues, but, because the subject may be worded differently in each, they do not know the question has been asked (and answered) previously. The same can be said for DNS and Mail, or just DNS in general. There have been 4 threads in a week-long period related to the new 10.4.6 DNS warning message in system.log. Though the specifics may be different, the overall issue of proper reverse DNS has been answered several times already. Again, the posters don't know this because they have only been following their own questions.

The solution: Reading up on other list threads can be beneficial in several ways...

- First and foremost, it allows you to know if your question has been answered, or at least touched upon, recently.

- It allows you familiarize yourself with the list community and how it operates.

- It allows you to familiarize yourself with the individuals on the list. This can be useful because you'll know the tone of voice used by the member, what their specific strengths and weaknesses are in terms of knowledge... and generally get to know some pretty cool people.

- It helps you become a better sys admin because you will be familiar with the many different issues that can arise when managing an OSX Server. Even if something doesn't pertain to your specific situation at the moment, it may come up at a later date. At the very least, browsing the other threads will increase your knowledge of how the OSXS works. Many services are interconnected with each other (e.g. DNS). Keeping generally informed will help you recognize those connections and help you troubleshoot related and seemingly unrelated problems.

Everyone is busy. There's hardly enough time in a day for us to do the things we'd like to (or need to) do. However, it takes but a minute to browse the messages to get general feel for what is being discussed. Please take that time, it would be beneficial to all involved.

thanks,

Jaime
