Re: contemplating SonicWall purchase

I'm just about to buy a SonicWall TZ 170 to replace my, uh, PowerMac 8100 running Vicom Internet Gateway. I'll be using it for NAT and firewall. Thanks to previous flaming on the topic, I was moved to read the SonicWall docs first. As far as I can tell, I should be able to do initial setup using a Mac; is this in fact the case? And will it be possible to do firmware updates without a PC? This isn't so important, as I have friends with PCs.

Or if anyone has suggestions for a box other than a SonicWall, I'd be interested.

I have a $1500 SonicWall sitting on a rack, powered off. On top of it is a $500 ZyXel that is allegedly less capable than the SonicWall. The SW works just fine... I just can't stand it. The ZyXel also works just fine and is several kajillion times easier to configure.

On the SW, every time I would upgrade the firmware, some feature would stop working. There hasn't been any compelling reason to update the firmware on the ZyXel other than good practice; and updates have caused no problems.

On the SW, I can't understand most of manual. It's not that it's over my head so much as it is written very poorly (the typical how-to instead of why-then-how manual). The ZyXel manual, despite clearly originating in another language, is much, much easier to derive understanding from.

Unless you're doing very high-end stuff, any firewall you choose will do pretty much a good job. But the SonicWall is just too much trouble to make it worth dealing with.

P.S. Yes, dhan, I know you have good experiences with SonicWalls, but if one's current firewall is VIG, then ZyXel is going to provide a much better migration experience than SonicWall.
