I am working on a shell script for account creation on a Tiger Server v10.4.4. I am noticing something that strikes me as odd, but may be normal.

If I look at an account in NetInfo Manager, the gid for the account is 20. This account has also been assigned a 2nd gid, but it is not displayed in NetInfo Manager. If I look at this same account in Workgroup Manager, in the Groups tab on the right-hand side of the window, the 2nd gid is listed, but the gid from the same account in NetInfo Manager (20) is not.

Why would each program only show one (1) of two (2) gids assigned to an account?

Is it the case that when you're looking at NetInfo, you're just looking at the user record, and thus pulling out the primary gid, whereas when you're looking at Workgroup Manager, you're also seeing any group records that have that user as a member?

The primary gid from NetInfo should appear in the Primary Group ID at the top of the user record in Workgroup Manager when looking at the Groups tab.
Nigel,

Thanks for responding. You are correct as to where I am looking. I noticed something else upon closer inspection in Workgroup Manager. I have a shell script that creates accounts on the server. When I use it, it appears that the primary group is also being added to the list of other groups. That is, gid 20 (staff) is the primary group, and its also listed as one of the other groups that the user is a member of. For all accounts created with the GUI, gid 20 is the primary group only (not listed in the other groups a user belongs to). Any idea how to prevent that from happening with the script?

Cheers,

-Jonathan
