We have received the "home folder for this user account is located on an AFP
or SMB server" due to the students being a member of too many groups. I am
not sure where the cut off is. Seems to be somewhere between 180 and 600
groups.

Apple's suggested setup has varied over the years. I suspect Josh's
is better, but I have no good reason why. Either way should work.
Given that, how does one change the search base without losing
existing user passwords and such data?
