Re: contemplating SonicWall purchase

There's no compelling reason to be updating the firmware on the SonicWall either.

Perhaps it has changed in the 1+ years since I used my SonicWall, but there was always some problem with the firmware. (My favorite example was when they told me that their DHCP server was incompatible with gigabit NICs and could I please remove the gig NICs from my Macs' motherboards?).

Each time I would upgrade the firmware it would usually solve the problem I was encountering, and create a new problem for which I would be told that some eventual future firmware update would address.

If you need answers to "why" you may choose to enable certain configurations then you're in need of education. Manuals are not designed to educate they are designed to provide operational instructions.

In the strictest sense, this is entirely true. However, a typical overworked LAN administrator is not going to understand the finer details of every system they administer. That's the unfortunate economics of IT in SMBs. The SonicWall docs I encountered made no attempt to explain even the most arcane things they talked about. By comparison, the ZyXel docs go through detailed explanations of how to strategize one's firewall implementation. You're right that they don't HAVE to tell me that. It's just awfully nice that they do.

Unless you're doing very high-end stuff, any firewall you choose will do pretty much a good job.

Then all cars might as well be Chevy's.

If you are fine with the lowest common denominator then you're fine. However most people understand that more is more.

Vicom Internet Gateway is a moped by comparison to most firewall appliances. If one is used to driving one of those, getting an 18- wheeler might not be the next logical choice. More is more, but in my 50-person company, I just don't see a need for an enterprise-class CMS or CRM that takes twenty people to feed. Likewise, more firewall features are not always desirable when one has limited time to spend dealing with the device.
