Don't you mean publish your *public* key at one of the canonical sites?

Um... Yes, sorry.

I have found that explaining the public vs private key thing to be one of the
hardest parts of training users new to PGP/GPG. So I want to make sure I'm not
missing some part of the puzzle.

It shouldn't let you publish your private key so it should never be a problem. --
