Apple's suggested setup has varied over the years. I suspect Josh's is better, but I have no good reason why. Either way should work.

Given that, how does one change the search base without losing existing user passwords and such data?

AFAIK it is not possible to change the search-base without setting up a new domain. I tried it with a different search base, no luck :-(
But login works, only the mount of the home-dir does not work, so the search base can not be the problem.
